Lesson 2 – Common Misconceptions about Addictions

Transcript:

Now let’s look at some common misconceptions in society about addiction.

The first one is ‘The brain that has the problem can’t solve it’.

If that were true, no one would ever be able to solve their own problems.

There would be no such thing as problem solving.

So we can see that that concept is not true.

The next one is ‘we need to break them down to build them up’, No one wants to be broken down. No one wants that.  People need help and support. As a matter of fact, it’s actually more effective to support someone than to break them down. Have you ever experienced being broken down and you now have a negative belief or fear of shame because of it? This is why we had to start this program off with addressing your fears, beliefs and experiences so that we can help you to move past those fears and get you the help you really need.

The 3rd one is, ‘They don’t like treatment, but it will help them in the long run’. This is taking the right to choose away from the person, as if their opinions doesn’t matter. When in fact, the one size fits all treatment doesn’t work for everybody. if people get help with what they need to get help with instead of being told that they don’t know what they need, things would be better.

The final one is a big one that I’m sure you’ve heard time and time again, ‘Once an addict always an addict’. But Is that really true? If everyone should say ‘once I feel pain I will always feel pain’ then would anyone go to the doctor? Why even bother? But the truth is having a drinking problem is not a death sentence, there’s an avenue for help and healing.

The bottom line is If you don’t believe that you have what it takes, you end up not performing your best, and not giving it your best shot. If you believe that you have what it takes, then change is absolutely possible.
