Starter Kit Questions and Answers

What is the most Important step for Recovery?

The most important step is to actively work towards reducing your most difficult triggers to drink/use.

If I want to reduce my drinking, and I want to use a replacement, what should I drink instead?

Here are some great options to replace your drinks with:

  • Le Croix
  • Ginger beer
  • Ice tea
  • Non-alchoholic or low % alcohol wines or beers

What Medications helps to reduce cravings?

Medications like acaprosate, naltrexone and buspar are effective in reducing cravings early on and Antabuse (disulfram) is effective as a barrier for most drinkers, if you need REAL motivation not to grab a drink (you are NOT going to like how you feel).

Make sure to speak to your physician about some of these options.

If I go to a social event and I would not like to drink, what should I have instead?

You could have mocktails and such can be great for social events. Also a simple soda or drink with lime in a nice glass can help divert attention from the fact that you’re not drinking.

If I am at a social event and someone asks me why I am not drinking, what should I say?

You can say one of the following:
– “I’m taking antibiotics”
-“I am on a diet/cleanse”
– “I’d rather keep your couch clean and not throw up on it tonight”

Just make sure you pick a reason and practice it (out loud) before having to actually say it to someone.
