Lesson 3 – Controlling your Mood

Transcripts:

Everyone wants the solution to their specific problem. But sometimes you have to make mistakes to learn the answers.

Every student wants to know exactly what questions are coming on the test and the exact answers to those questions that are on the test. You find the answers by learning what is taught to you and by studying for that test. But not everyone will know the answers to those questions or get the answers right, after the paper has been graded, you first had to get the wrong answer, to learn the right answer.

The problem is we’ve gotten so comfortable with the notion that everything will fall in our laps and things will always be easy. You have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Be comfortable with things not panning out, because in it, there is a lesson to be learned, and that lesson will point you in the direction of success.

When negative thoughts come up, start a conversation with yourself and explain what is currently happening and that you’ve experienced this before, what didn’t work before and what should work and tell yourself that you know that it will come to an end; the feelings, fears, thoughts won’t last forever. Train yourself to recognize negative thoughts that are triggers for you and start that conversation with yourself. It won’t be easy or happen overnight, but it will definitely be of great help to you and you’ll get better as time goes by.

When you start to see and understand your own patterns, you know that the good times are coming after the bad times, so learn as much as you can in bad times. Use the tools that we provided to help you, use the reality testing tool to help with thinking things through and thinking things that are more helpful for you.
